Should we tan or not?

There are so many reasons why tanning is bad for your skin and I will be summarizing why tanning is bad for you, why it is good for you and some other ways to help you achieve that bronzed glow you and many other people are craving. Why is it that tanning has increased so greatly since the 1800’s? That’s 211 years. What’s the difference between then and now?
One of the first questions me and many other people want to know is why go tanning? I can tell you from some research and interviewing people along with my own views that tanning is awesome! I love tanning, it’s so relaxing, it helps me let go of all my worries and enjoy a nap while my skin is getting bronzed. One of the plus’s of a tan is that it accentuates your muscle tone giving the appearance that your muscles are bigger and leaner than they actually are. It can also hide or blend the look of cellulite, stretch marks, and blemishes. Some people think tanning makes you look healthier and better looking.

  1. Good job on your blog with supporting evidence to your argument. It was informative and to the point. I like that. My only suggestion would be look again at the "Melanocytes cells," it should probably read with only cells being plural and melanocytes being in singular form. Awesome job Cindy!

  2. Is there anything that is beneficial about tanning besides the superficial change in skin color? I know that you get vitamin D from the sun can it also be gained from tanning beds? It might just be me but I don't think that a tanned person is any better looking than a good looking person that doesn't tan. I don't think that tanning makes people look bad either as long as they don't over due it like the cast of the Jersey Shore. Do you by chance have any statistic concerning your likely hood of getting skin cancer from using tanning beds? Is it comparable to smoking and lung cancer or is tanning and skin cancer connection blown out of proportion?

  3. I know from being from the rainiest state in the country that tanning helped me alot when I felt blue! i think that was the most beneficial thing for me when i tanned on occasion but i had to stop due to my high risk of skin cancer.. I know there are beds that supposedly take out alot of the harmful rays is there any truth to that?

  4. Thank you Kaylene! Your a big help I went back through and made some changes! Thanks Doll

The Beer Barron: To answer your first question is there anything beneficial? Other then a nice glow and Vitamin D absorbtion, no. Yes, vitamin D can also be obtained through tanning beds, the UVA and UVB rays are very similar to the suns. I do like tanned skin, but I also like paler skin, so I'm with yoy there. I understand your thoughts about the cast of Jersey Shore and their orangyness. To answer your question concerning the tanning bed statistics, no. I will look into that and post about it :)I will get back to you!

Diesel Dad: I know exactly what you mean, tanning is a depression minimizer and helps alot of people suffering from depression. You know you can go tanning twice a week for that added vitamin D boost and you shoul be ok. From what I've read and learned you just have to monitor how much sun your getting. So to your question, no there is no truth to that. All tanning beds have UVB and UVA rays, they will make your tan skin therefor are bad for you.No matter what they say, it's a gimic to get you to buy one.

  5. Cindy, yours blog is pretty sweet it looks like you put a lot of effort into it since I last looked at it. Would it be a good assumption that tanning bed lights are a lot lights used for aquariums and lizards to give them the correct UV rays while they are held in captivity? I can admit to having tanned before and I can't agree with it being enjoyable. I hated laying in that tube it was so hot and not relaxing. I suppose it can be compared to working out in a way. If you don't care about results you probably can't enjoy a workout. Much like if your not really committed or care about getting a tan you can't find the joy in tanning. I have one last question, is tanning while pregnant safe?

  6. Beer Baron, Thank you, I'm trying trying to keep it going! Yes, it is safe to say that lizard lights are comarable to tanning beds..lizards gotta get their tans on, they are also cold blooded so they need the sun to regulate their body temperture! When I tan..I usually have an event to be tanend for otther then that I'm Pasty-girl. I do find it enjoyable though, I have 15 minutes away from the world and I sleep. Very good comparison..I hate working out,but LOVE the results. TANNING IS NOT SAFE FOR PREGNANCY.IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED, SO IF YOUR carrying a bundle of joy Baron stay outta the tanning bed or sun! When you tan in a tanning bed your getting a concentrated amount of UV light and it can be harmful to the fetus.

  7. I just got a rather disturbing image in my head of a pregnant Scott.

Anyway, nice job on the blog. I think tanning creates the illusion of health. For example, I have had a few girlfriends in the past the have tanned. And there is definitely something about a tan that hides skin blemishes and reduces shadows that might highlight small bits of cellulite here and there. So, tanning creates the impression of better, clearer skin, and it hides those little lumpies. I also know that I personally feel a lot better when I get the chance to go play in the sun and swim. That vitamin D is good, but I suppose you just need to be careful about how much skin damage you're doing to get it.
